Nearly 90% of Americans know about "Barbie," but Democrats are twice as likely as Republicans to actually watch the movie

Almost every American knows this blockbuster, according to a new survey by Yahoo Entertainment and YouGov.

88% of the 1,665 American adults surveyed say they have heard at least “a little” about a Warner Bros. comedy. and Mattel, while 39% said they had heard “a lot.”

This is not entirely surprising Barbie He just passed Super Mario Bros movie as the highest-grossing movie of 2023. Since its July 21 debut, the blockbuster starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling has grossed $575 million in the US and nearly $1.3 billion worldwide.

There’s still some money on the table, too. Only 14% of those surveyed between August 17 and August 21 actually watched the film. Warner Bros. enticing fans back with a new Imax cut of the film with additional post-credits footage.

Barbie It became not just a cinematic phenomenon but a social one, as theaters were filled with enthusiastic crowds, many of whom donned the iconic pink outfits of the film’s heroine.

While the film gladly highlights patriarchy, the gender divide in the audience is not as stark as conventional wisdom might seem. Female respondents were 17% more likely to have seen the film, but males weren’t far behind at 11%. (According to polling site PostTrak, females made up 65% of the opening weekend audiences.)

The biggest divide comes in political affiliation, with Democrats (20%) more than twice as likely to watch the film as Republicans (9%).

The film’s social, political, and feminist themes became a particularly hot issue in the days following its release, with conservative critics such as Ben Shapiro (“Flaming Garbage Heap of a Movie”), Jack Posobiec (“Men-hating Walk of Fame”) and Charlie Kirk (“Men-hating Propaganda”). And while slightly more Americans believe the movie portrays men fairly (19%) than unfairly (15%), a much larger percentage are unsure (54%) or have never heard of the movie (12%).

Co-writer and director Greta Gerwig greatly downplayed the film’s political messages in a pre-release interview with Yahoo Entertainment, saying it was never intended to be public.

“It’s like you order a regular margarita, and then you realize it’s a hot margarita,” Gerwig told us. “It was kind of the way I wanted it to be. But these are the films that I like the most. (The films of) Ernst Lubitsch, Preston Sturgess, Howard Hawks. The films are soufflés, but there’s a lot of deep stuff underneath, and it’s not presented that way.

The Yahoo Entertainment survey was conducted by YouGov using a nationally representative sample of 1,665 US adults interviewed online from August 17-21, 2023. The sample was weighted according to gender, age, race, education, turnout in the 2020 election, presidential vote, and baseline. Party identification and current voter registration status. Demographic weighting targets come from the 2019 American Community Survey. Primary party identification is the most recent answer given by a respondent before November 1, 2022, and is weighted for the estimated distribution at that time (33% Democrat, 27% Republican).
